DOWNLOAD LOCATION CHANGER · FEATURE GUIDE

Change Chrome’s download folder on Windows

Download Location Changer helps you send completed Chrome downloads to the project folder you are working in. Choose a full Windows path, keep frequently used destinations close, and open the current folder from the extension.

Change Chrome’s default folder or switch by project?

For one permanent destination, Chrome’s built-in download setting may be enough. For work that moves between projects, the extension keeps recent destinations and lets you pin frequently used paths. The current folder stays visible so you can check the destination before downloading.

Use a complete Windows folder path

Copy the complete folder path from File Explorer, such as C:\Projects\Video\Sources or D:\Client work\Assets. Paste it into the destination field and apply it. The drive or network root and the final folder matter: do not remove the drive letter or turn an absolute destination into a relative subfolder.

Why the Windows companion is required

Chrome restricts extension download filenames to locations relative to its download directory. The Windows companion handles absolute destinations: Chrome completes the initial download, then the companion transfers the file to the chosen folder. This is a local transfer workflow, so the extension alone cannot provide unrestricted absolute-path routing.

Check the destination before your next download

Look for the connected Windows helper status and confirm the current folder. Open that folder from the extension, download a small test file, and verify it appears there. A disconnected helper, an unavailable drive, or a folder without write permission can prevent the final transfer. Avoid changing destinations midway through a test.
